According to a report by Reuters, a report by investigators with the United Nations accuses the Myanmar military of carrying out mass killings and gang rapes of Muslim Rohingya with 'genocidal intent." The report goes on to recommend that the country's commander-in-chief, as well as five generals, should face prosecution. U.N. secretary-general Antonio Guterres told a meeting of the UN Security Council that acountability would be essential for any genuine reconciliation between all ethnic groups. Guterres reportedly said the report by independent experts found “‘patterns of gross human rights violations and abuses’ committed by the security forces, which it said ‘undoubtedly amount to the gravest crimes under international law.’”
