Vijayakanth is a Tamil actor and politician.

Vijayakanth made his debut as an actor in MA Kaja's Inikkum Ilamai in 1979, in which he portrayed the role of an antagonist. Though Inikkum Ilamai and the films that followed were box-office flops, Vijayakanth continued to pick diverse roles.

For unknown reasons, Nadigar Sangam went into huge debts, amounting to Rs 4.5 crore. It was Vijayakanth's tactical decision that saved the Nadigar Sangam from sinking.

He organised a fund-raising event, popularly known as the star night in Singapore and Malaysia in 2002. The event turned out to be a huge success and he cleared the debts with the funds received from the star night.

He was the Leader of the Opposition of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016. Prior to becoming a politician, he was a film actor in Tamil cinema from 1979 to 2010. He is the founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and served as a Member of Legislative Assembly representing the constituency of Rishivandiyam.

Vijayakanth declared that 1 October, which is actor Sivaji Ganesan's birthday, be observed as Actors' Day in Tamil Nadu.
