Issa Rae on 'Insecure' and Gentrification
  • 6 years ago
Issa Rae addresses the impacts of gentrification in subtle, yet impactful ways in “Insecure.”

“I live in Inglewood. I just moved but like, living in Inglewood, seeing the change around me, seeing so many places have to shut down being of the city’s interest in promoting the stadiums being built there or “stadiums” plural,” she explained.

“Insecure” season 2 included a few nods to Inglewood’s changing landscape, including Rae’s character’s rent hikes, old businesses being closed in her neighborhood, and the fictional transition from Inglewood to “I-Wood.”

“It’s heartbreaking, and my mom lives there. And for me — even shooting the [season 1] there — realizing this show would serve as a time capsule for L.A. changing so much, because so many of the places we’ve shot in are now either shut down, for sale, being renovated to be something else, and it’s just so interesting that this show will hold a piece of history for what once was,” said Rae.

The “Insecure” star and creator explained that the fake nickname “I-Wood” is actually starting to permeate the neighborhood. She got the inspiration for it after living in New York and hearing names like “So-Hi” and wondering what that would look like in L.A.
