August 16, 2018 - It’s 111 degrees Fahrenheit in Nasiriyah, Iraq and this wasp is likely collecting water to cool its nest. It’s fairly common to find a wasp foraging for water. They are known to return to a good foraging site many times to collect water. The videographer noted that the wasp continuously returned to the pipe that day. Wasps collect water for many things besides drinking. For example, they use water to mix with wood pulp to construct their nest. They also use it for cooling the nest and sharing with nestmates and larvae.
