The stern of the USS Abner Read broke away when it was hit by a mine off the Alaskan coast in 1943. Its location remained unknown until a team from Project Recover found it on the sea bed in July. The ship survived the blast and was towed for repairs, but the incident led to the loss of 71 sailors.Project Recovery, a NOAA-supported team from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and University of Delaware, found the ship. After the wreckage was identified, the team aboard the recovery ship cast a wreath into the sea in memory of the lost sailors, as seen in this video. The wreckage can also be seen, encrusted in sea life.
