Chinese plane skids off Manila runway amid downpour

A plane from China skidded off the runway while landing in a downpour at Manila airport on Thursday, veering off into a grassy area. Its 157 passengers and eight crew members were evacuated safely via emergency slides. An airport official said one of the plane’s two engines appeared to have been damaged.
Torrential monsoon rains have displaced thousands of residents in Manila and in northern parts of the Philippines.
