Two Koreas completely restore military communication lines on both eastern and western sides of peninsula
  • 6 years ago
During the inter-Korean summit back in April.... the two Koreas agreed to stop all hostile acts against each other and reduce military tensions.
And on Wednesday, South and North Korea moved one step closer to achieving that goal.
Park Ji-won has more.
South Korea's defense ministry announced that inter-Korean military communication lines for the eastern part of the Korean Peninsula were completely restored as of Wednesday.
All functions of the line, such as phone call and fax functions, are now working as normal.
The restoration of the eastern military line comes 8 years after it was severed due to wild forest fire in November 2010.
The restoration also came, about a month after the military communication lines for the western part of the peninsula were restored in mid-July.
South Korea's defense ministry said, with the complete restoration on both sides of the peninsula, South and North Korea's militaries have now secured stable communication channels,... and this will substantially contribute to easing military tensions and building trust between the two.
The ministry also said the newly-restored lines can support the two rounds of reunions of separated families, which will be held throughout next week.
The defense ministry also expects the lines will serve a role in facilitating inter-Korean cooperation projects, such as the projects to modernize railroads and highways.
The complete restoration of the military communication lines had been agreed during April's historic inter-Korean summit and at the following talks between generals of the two Koreas.
