In a tiny basement bookstore in Hong Kong, around 40 stray cats walk freely across stacks of titles or among browsing customers. Bookstore owner and cat lover Caroline Chan has been taking care of stray cats since 1978 when she started out as a junior clerk at the shop. International Cat Day, a worldwide celebration created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare, falls on August 8.
