Smoke rises high into the sky as wildfires burn in the south of Portugal.

Footage filmed on August 6 near the tourist hotspot of Monchique shows a small fire burning in the bush as grey smoke takes over the skyline.

More than 1,100 firefighters have been deployed to battle the blaze, which has been burning for four days.

At least 44 people have required medical assistance.
