TMC protests in front of Parliament over NRC draft
  • 6 years ago
A fresh week starts and the parliament is back in session. After the NRC debate that raged on last week among the parliamentarians, there are other bills likely to be introduced in the Rajya Sabha today. Prime among those is the bill to amend the SC/ST atrocities prevention act which was cleared by the cabinet last week. The Supreme Court had diluted the SC/ST act through its ruling that a preliminary enquiry was required to arrest any person even under the SC/ST act meant for prevention of atrocities against those covered under the act. This led to massive pan India protests by the Dalit communities, forcing the centre to bring a bill to roll back the dilution made by the top court in the first place. The other crucial bill that is to be tabled in the parliament is the national commission for backward class’s bill, passed by the Lok Sabha last week.
