Italian police evicted hundreds of people from a campsite widely used by Roma people in Rome on July 26. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued a partial stop after an application made on behalf of “vulnerable” residents.According to Amnesty International a Rome-based NGO, Associazione 21 Luglio, had asked the ECHR to suspend the eviction until at least July 27.The EHCR told Storyful that the order to stop the eviction applied only to three people and not the whole camp. Three people “with medical problems or suffering vulnerabilities” applied through an Italian association, they said.“The Government confirmed that the applicant had accepted the accommodation proposed” a spokesperson for the EHCR said. “Thus the Court, in light of the reassurances on the alternative accommodation measures, decided not to prolong the application of interim measures any further”The Mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi welcomed the decision to clear the camp in a Facebook comment. “The European Court of Human Rights agreed with us”, Raggi said, “The Camping River eviction is correct”.Police in Rome released a statement saying the camp was cleared peacefully despite local social media reports of violence.
