Forget Cape Canaveral, it's lift-off for this remote Scottish crofter community as UK builds first spaceport
  • 6 years ago
In the famous classic Ealing Comedy "Whisky Galore," a remote community of crofters - that's Scots for farmers - had their lives changed by a ship which ran aground with a huge cargo of malt whisky.

Now, for the crofters of the coastal village of Melness in Sutherland on the north coast of Scotland, one might say it is "Rockets Galore" after the UK government announced plans to build the first spaceport in the country on land nearby at Moihne - otherwise known as Melness Croft.

The land is jointly owned by crofters from Melness, potentially earning them millions from the lucrative and sought-after orbit for satellites.
