A natural disaster is a sudden event that causes widespread destruction, lots of collateral damage or loss of life, brought about by forces other than the acts of human beings. A natural disaster might be caused by earthquakes, flooding, volcanic eruption, landslide, hurricanes etc. In order to be classified as a disaster, it will have profound environmental effect and/or human loss and frequently incurs financial loss.

ప్రపంచం శతాబ్దాలుగా అనేక ప్రకృతి వైపరీత్యాలకు గురి అవుతూనే ఉంది. మానవ నిర్మిత యుద్ధాలు ఓ వైపు అలాగే తీవ్రవాదం ఇంకో వైపు..మరో వైపు ఆకలి మంటలు..ఇంకో వైపు అంతు చిక్కని రోగాలు ఇలా అణు నిత్యం ఏదో ఓ వైపరీత్యం మనుషుల్ని చంపేస్తూనే ఉంది. ఇక భూకంపాలు ,సునామీలు,తుఫాన్లు ఒక్కసారిగా విరుచుకుపడి ప్రపంచాన్ని సర్వనాశనం చేస్తున్నాయి. ప్రపంచం వీటి దెబ్బకు విలవిలలాడిపోతోంది.శతాబ్దాల నుంచి ప్రపంచంలో జరిగిన అతి భయంకర వైపరీత్యాలను తెలుసుకుంటే ఒళ్లు జలదరించడం ఖాయం.. ఈ సందర్భంగా ప్రపంచానికి షాక్‌ కొట్టించిన వైపరీత్యాల గురించి తెలుసుకుందాం.ప్రపంచంలోనే స్వాతంత్ర్యం సాధించుకున్న మొట్టమొదటి నల్లజాతి దేశం హైతీ. అప్పుడు ఫ్రెంచ్ సైన్యం ప్రపంచంలోకెల్ల అత్యంత శక్తివంతమైంది. దాన్ని ఒడించి ఎల్లలు దాటించిన దేశం అది. అటువంటి హైతీలో 2010 జనవరి 12 న భారీ భూకంపం సంభవించింది. ఈ భూకంప కేంద్రం రాజధాని పోర్ట్- అవ్-ప్రిన్స్ కి కేవలం 16 కిలోమీటర్ల దూరంలో ఉంది. రెక్టర్ స్కేల్ మీద 7.3 తీవ్రతతో నగరాన్ని కుదిపేసింది.
