Government warns Whatsapp to stem spread of fake news; group administrators get more control

After a spate of lynching incidents across the country triggered by fake news circulated on Whatsapp, the messaging platform has now set upon cracking down on such viral messages. The govt came down heavily upon whatsapp for not doing enough to ward off fake news. Following the govt's warning, whatsapp on Tuesday issued advertisements in Indian dailies on how to tackle false information. Besides that, it also has a list of other measures to check the spread of fake news. Whatsapp will now label forwarded messages as separate from self-composed ones. Apart from that whatsapp has accorded more powers to group administrators to control the information within individual groups.
