In the first case of capital punishment for child rape after the new law was passed by the state govt - a court in MP's Sagar district has given death penalty to a man convicted of raping a 9-year-old girl in may this year. The death sentence was awarded to the accused within a record 46 days of the incident. The accused has been convicted under the POCSO act. In December last year, the MP assembly had unanimously passed a bail seeking death for those found guilty of raping girls under 12 years of age. After President's approval - the bill came into effect from April 21 this year. Welcoming the judgement CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that the punishment will act as a deterrent.
