Reuters reports that Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced Wednesday that he plans to retire. Kennedy turns 82 in July and is the second-oldest justice on the nine-member court. He was appointed in 1988 by Republican President Ronald Reagan. He helped to advance gay rights, support abortion rights and erase political spending limits. His retirement takes effect on July 31.
