Migrants Removed from Paris University After Five-Month Occupation
  • 6 years ago

Around 60 migrants who had occupied a building of the University Paris 8 in Saint Denis since January 30 were removed on June 26 by CRS officers.A group of students had welcomed the migrants into the building. They had previously been sleeping on the streets in the vicinity of the campus. The group’s manifesto called for, among other things, an end to the Dublin Regulation and an ending of the distinction between “economic migrants” and “political refugees”.In February, Le Figaro quoted emails from the president of the university which said that the occupation would be allowed continue provided health and safety standards were maintained and that the buildings could be used for their normal educational purposes. The president’s emails said that the proposals were rejected by collectives who spoke on behalf of the migrants.According to L’Obs, the eventual removal on June 26 was prompted by an outbreak of scabies among university staff.Photos from inside the building also show graffiti and structural damage.
