Maharashtra govt has enforced a plastic ban in the state from today, setting an example for the rest of the country. The govt has mandated steep fines and even jail term for repeat offenders. The penalties for first-time and second-time offenders will be Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000, respectively. A third violation will attract a fine of Rs 25,000 and even jail term for three months. The state govt has imposed a ban on manufacturing, use, sale, distribution and storage of plastic materials such as one-time-use bags, spoons, plates, pet and pet bottles and thermocol items. The govt will also keep a strict vigil on plastic smugglers as it claims that 80% banned plastic is manufactured in Gujarat and smuggled to Maharashtra.
