Defiant Merkel Backs Europe Migrant Policy As Bavaria Row Simmers

Amid demands for a European solution, Reuters on Saturday reported that German Chancellor Angela Merkel insisted on giving no ground to her Bavarian allies that threaten her three-month-old coalition. Merkel rejected plans by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, for Germany to unilaterally send back migrants who have registered in other European Union countries. Such a reversal would be a huge blow to Merkel, as it would undermine the Schengen open-border system at a time when EU tensions over migration are running high.
