The streets of major cities in Nicaragua were empty on June 14 during a day-long strike to demand that President Daniel Ortega step down, local reports said. The protests turned violent later on Thursday, with reports of five deaths as a result of clashes in Leon, Bilwi and Tipitapa. The protests were held amid growing unrest and violence after Ortega announced changes to the country’s social security system in April that would have cut pensions and raised workers’ contributions. The changes were subsequently reversed. Credit: Oralia Del Carmen Sobalvarro via Storyful
