Apple to close iPhone security loophole used by cops, criminals

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple is releasing a new software update that will make it much harder for police and criminals to crack iPhones to access data.
The company said on Wednesday the update is called USB Restricted Mode and will close off data access through an iPhone's Lightning port if the device hasn't been unlocked in the past hour, CNET reports.

The update is meant to close a security hole that left customers at risk to identity thieves.

According to the company, "At Apple, we put the customer at the center of everything we design. We're constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves and intrusions into their personal data. We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don't design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs."
