Housing protests in Plettenberg Bay, South Africa, turned violent on June 14 with road and school closures in the area following reports of petrol bombs and fires.Locals described the area as a “war zone” and “hostage situation” as roads leading into and out of the town were blocked by protesters. The protests followed a large fire in the Qolweni area on June 3 that destroyed the homes of 74 individuals, including 31 children.Residents in the area are protesting the current backlog for victims of the fire to receive funding from the Department of Human Settlements.
