Media Coverage of Climate Change has Gone Way Down

TV coverage of climate change has dropped by 66% according to a Media Matters analysis. ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX covered climate change for just 50 total minutes during their news broadcasts in 2016. That is the least amount of coverage in the past five years, even though 2016 was the hottest year ever recorded. Hurricane Matthew wreaked havoc in the Caribbean and Southeastern United States. Southeastern wildfires burned through 100,000 acres of forest in Tennessee. Record-breaking rainfall drowned the state of Louisiana. Not to mention, the history-making election gave climate change deniers a voice. Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump differed dramatically in their views on environmental issues, but petty distractions consistently stole attention away from the actual issues. Take for instance: The debates. Trump repeatedly avoided addressing climate change. He would dodge the issue whenever it came up and switch the conversation to other topics. But, rather than addressing his question-dodging, the media paid more attention to Ken Bone’s mustache and red sweater. Let’s fast forward to today: Donald Trump is President of the United States. The Secretary of State reportedly misled the public about climate change to boost ExxonMobil’s success. The head of the EPA has refused to address the issue of climate change… How about we just start talking about it?
