How Seaweed Could Help Fix the World's Climate Crisis
  • 6 years ago
Seaweed could help fix our climate crisis. Meet Bren Smith, he operates a kelp farm in Connecticut, on the Long Island Sound. At his farm seaweed and mussels grow on floating ropes, and buckets of scallops and oysters also hang from the ropes. The seaweed absorbs so much carbon dioxide that it actually helps de-acidify the water, creating the ideal environment for shellfish. This type of farming is still in an early stage of development, but both the U.S. and China are integrating seaweed into sustainable marine farms. Smith and his team founded Green Wave, a nonprofit with the mission of creating more seaweed farms. Research shows that if 9% of the ocean were to be covered in seaweed (a chunk 4.5 times the size of Australia), the seaweed would remove 53 billion tons of co2 from the atmosphere per year and increase fish production. This method of Aquaculture is an opportunity to make money, feed animals and prevent a global crisis. Seems like the future may lie in the hands of seaweed farming.
