Campaigners lose court appeal over Northern Ireland abortion

The Supreme Court has ruled it “has no jurisdiction to make a declaration” on the legality of Northern Ireland’s abortion law, stating human rights campaigners do not have the “standing to bring these proceedings”. Despite this, a majority of the court expressed the opinion that the current legislation is “incompatible” with Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights in the cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormality.
