Lakes are often used as sites for baptisms, but they do sometimes present dangers. The BBC reports that Pastor Docho Eshete who was performing the rite in an Ethiopian lake on Sunday was killed by a crocodile. 80 baptisms were planned for that day. "He baptized the first person and he passed on to another one. All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor," Ketema Kairo, an area resident, told the BBC. Those gathered were successful in preventing the animal from taking the victim's body away, but they could not save the religious leader, who succumbed to the severe wounds he'd sustained.
The Independent reports that the attacker was likely a Nile crocodile, a sort known to grow as long as 20 feet and weigh up to a ton.   The lake where the baptisms were being performed is a known hub for crocodiles at large.  The Lonely Planet website describes Lake Abaya as having, "a large population of crocodiles, which are said to be aggressive towards people and animals because the lake has few fish, their preferred food."
