Ben Rhodes, an adviser to former President Obama, recalls in his recently-released memoir, 'The World As It Is,' how the then-leader reacted to news that Donald Trump had won the 2016 election. Rhodes writes that Obama advised people to "find some high ground, and hunker down."  The author also notes the former president was "just like the rest of us — trying out different theories for what happened, trying to figure out what it meant, what it said about us as a country."  According to Rhodes, one of the theories that Obama shared was that "maybe we pushed too far. Maybe people just want to fall back into their tribe."  Obama is also said to have stated, "We're about to find out just how resilient our institutions are, at home and around the world."
