The 14 most polluted cities in the world are all in India according to a recent WHO air pollution survey and Kanpur, a northern metropolis known for its leather and shoe industries, tops the list. The pain has building up for much longer, but as the world marks Environment Day, the fallout has reached crisis point for many in Kanpur. The number of patients has jumped from about 40,000 in 2015 to 64,000 last year. The number of chronic pulmonary disease and lung cancer cases is rising among non-smokers, particularly women. Children under five are also suffering more.
