The Power of Pride: A History of LGBTQ+ Superheroes

To kick off Pride Month, Kya and Dev are here with a look into the meteoric rise of LGBTQ+ superheroes.

Throughout comics history, LGBTQ superheroes, LGBT superheroes, queer superheroes, gay superheroes, lesbian superheroes, transgender superheroes and trans superheroes have faced an uphill battle for acceptance, diversity and representations. For decades, DC comics and Marvel comics failed to present any meaningful LGBTQ superhero, LGBT superhero, queer superhero, gay superhero, lesbian superhero, transgender superhero or trans superhero.

But in recent years the LGBTQ+ comics community has experienced a renaissance of LGBTQ characters and themes in their superhero comics. But today, LGBTQ+ comics characters like Harley Quinn, Batwoman, Constantine, Northstar, Midnighter, Wonder Woman, Deadpool and several members of the X-Men like Iceman, have instilled a new sense of LGBTQ+ Pride in superhero comics. The movies still have a lot of catching up to do, but given the meteoric rise of LBGTQ+ Superheroes in recent years, we’re confident that they’ll come around soon.
