Heroic off-duty nurse saves the life of a man stabbed in the street

Abigail Bamber, 26, was driving back from a day out shopping in the city centre with a friend when she saw a man stumbling across the road. The staff nurse who was on a day off for her 26th birthday - which she celebrated two days earlier - got her friend to pull over and saw the man fall to the floor. After discovering he wasn't breathing, she immediately began CPR before handing over to the paramedics when they arrived. Abigail, a nurse on a surgical ward at Bristol's Southmead Hospital, dismissed suggestions she was a hero and said she "just went into nurse mode".
