Scientists have captured the heartbreaking moment a marmoset cares for its dying partner in an event described as "astonishing". The male monkey was filmed and photographed embracing the female after she fell from a tree and suffered fatal injuries. She lay on the ground for more than two hours as the male comforted her in her final moments. He prevented young marmosets from approaching the dying female, behaviour previously observed in chimpanzees.
