Popular Instagram Beach in Thailand to Close Due to Tourists Maya Beach in Thailand is set to close on Friday as a result of too many visiting tourists who have damaged the ecosystem. The massive number of boats and people visiting the beach each day have kicked up sediment that has destroyed some of the coral reefs near the beach. The beach, which is located on Phi Phi Leh Island in the Andaman Sea, will re-open after four months and have a per day limit of 2,000 tourists. While the beach is closed, Thailand’s National Parks and Wildlife Department will help aid the recovery of the coral. Maya Beach first became popular after Leonardo DiCaprio appeared on it in 'The Beach' back in 2000.
