I have gotten several people who struggle with changing all of the filter grids in their top manifold D.E. filter. Some have had D.E. leaking back in after replacing all eight grids. Here I show you the easy way to do this procedure. \r
\r
If you have already taken all the grids out and the filter is apart:\r

If you also need a new Top Manifold maybe just order a Complete Assembly.\r

I am changing the grids here in an FNS Plus filter but it is the same for an American Products D.E. filter. It is essentially the same for the Hayward and Jandy filters except they have one rod down the middle which is ually easier. The newer filters will have a nice plastic guide to help you align the top manifold. \r
\r
You see me tapping the top, as long as all the grids are aligned and in place under the top manifold that is the easy way to get the top onto the grids. You wont break any grids that way. They will snap and break if the top is not aligned properly and you go to screw the top down with the nut or bolt on the rod (s). So make sure they are aligned before you screw the top manifold down. I find tapping the top manifold to be effective.\r

After you got it all back together and you charge it up with D.E. and it leaks - it will be one of the following problems:\r
\r
1) A grid snapped on top as you where putting it back together\r
2) The stem o-ring was bad and isnt sealing the stem pipe.\r
3) The stem pipe could also be cracked and leaking.\r
4) The backwash o-rings are worn - replace the backwash piston or you can\r
also install new o-rings onto the piston. If it is 6 yrs or older just replace the entire piston.\r
5) The top manifold is not snug and some of the grids are exposed allowing D.E. back into the pool.\r
\r
These are the usual problems if D.E. is leaking after you replace all eight grids. It is pretty easy if you do it this way. If you take all the grids out and try to build it outside the filter -- it is more challenging. I can do it as I build these all the time but I always build them like this now. \r
