An unmanned drone system was used to assist in evacuating a homeowner from Leilani Estates, near the active Kilauea volcano on May 27.According to USGS, the team was conducting mapping missions in the lower East Rift Zone to monitor lava flow advancement rates when they noticed lava moving through Luana St into a residential area.The team alerted Emergency Operations Center of the lava advancement and helped police and fire crews on their rescue mission by providing live updates on the lava flow.One resident who was trapped in his home near Luana St was spotted and asked to follow the drone to safety. He was instructed to use his cellphone flashlight to identify himself to emergency services.This video shows aerial footage of the rescue mission taking place as the lava moves closer to the residential area.
