British Parking Association - Finding a space for the consumer in the parking debate

Every day millions of journeys end in a parking space. We all want to live in a cleaner, safer, less congested world, yet without effective parking management there would be chaos, and access to places and people would be significantly harder.

Technology is changing rapidly. Innovation and better regulation are key to the success of future transport networks. Smarter parking technology is delivering benefits for businesses, road users and local communities, enabling users to search, book and pay for parking quickly and easily.

Local authorities do an excellent job keeping us safe, reducing congestion, improving air quality and enhancing the economic vitality of town centres. The majority don’t make a surplus from parking. Strict rules govern how they record and spend parking income and we encourage transparency in reporting this, demonstrating how revenue is reinvested back into services.

At hospitals the key is making parking fair for all, not a free for all! Free parking would mean maintenance costs coming directly from healthcare budgets which we believe are for providing healthcare, not parking spaces.

The majority of motorists will never receive a parking ticket but if they do they should always respond to parking operators and use the free relevant appeals service. We provide a free information service at www.knowyourparkingrights.org and advise motorists not to ignore a ticket but to pay if it’s been issued fairly or appeal if it hasn’t.

We welcome the Parking (Code of Practice) Bill sponsored by Sir Greg Knight MP and in Scotland the Members Bill launched by Murdo Fraser MSP. Both, we hope, will provide greater consistency in the management of parking on private land.

We’re a not-for-profit membership association and the leading authority in the sector with 50 years’ experience. We advance knowledge, raise standards and promote professionalism. We work with Government and stakeholders to achieve excellence in parking for all and place the consumer at the heart of our thinking.
