The US Capitol was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon October 3, 2013 after a woman rammed an Infiniti car into a White House gate, was chased by Secret Service police and shot and killed.
The incident began at about 2.18pm at 15th Street and E Street North West in the US capital when the woman, driving a black Infiniti, argued with security guards and attempted to breach the security barrier, according to media reports. She sped off southeast along Pennsylvania Avenue. The woman proceeded to drive down Constitution Avenue. At Constitution Avenue near First Street, she collided with a police car. The officer in that car was severely injured after crashing. The airbag deployed and rescue workers needed to use the "jaws of life" to pry him from the car. At Constitution Avenue and Second Street, the chase came to an end. The woman tried to turn the vehicle after approaching security barriers blocking the road. She exited the vehicle and was shot by police. Police say they did not realise until later that a child aged about 1 year old was in the car during the chase. — Reuters
