Hello and welcome to another didimitten video. Today I am going to explain why gravel is a bad idea to use as a substrate in your turtle tank and the dangers it has for your turtle or turtles. I have had a lot of questions regarding the use of gravel so I am using this video to explain why it is a bad idea. \r
\r
Gravel can be swallowed by your curious turtle and can sometimes tragically lead to impion. This is when the gravel becomes stuck in the digestive tr of the turtle and can also cut the turtle from the inside causing internal bleeding. This leads to surgery and even death.\r
\r
Wild turtles of course encounter gravel in the wild and many other dangers. Many may have died from impion as well as deaths to a predator, motor vehicles, and illness. Regardless of the fate of wild turtles, captive turtles HAVE died from impion caused by gravel. This is a sad f and can be avoided by simply using a different substrate. \r
\r
Gravel is also sharp and can cause scratches and lesions on the plastron (underside) of the turtles shell and this can lead to infection and shell rot.\r
