Lava Spews From Cracks in Pohoiki Road
A newly formed crack on Pohoiki Road in Pahoa, Hawaii, spewed lava several feet in the air in the early morning of May 18.According to local reports the crack formed because the land is inflating and expanding due to the volcanic activity happening underneath it. Steven Brantley who works with the USGS was discussing the crack and said, “I think clearly it points to the potential for additional eruptive activity in the lower east rift zone,” which is why officials are urging residents to stay alert and be ready to evacuate at a moments notice.
