Lancaster bomber stuns onlookers on Dambuster's 75th anniversary
  • 6 years ago
A Lancaster bomber performed a surprise flypast over Hathersage today (May 17) in commemoration of the Dambuster's 75th anniversary.

The unannounced manoeuvre took place after the planned flypast on the real 75th anniversary – yesterday – was cancelled.

The bomber took off from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

The last surviving member of the RAF squad of the famous Operation Chastise, Johnny Johnson, was on board the legendary bomber.

The operation, in 1943, targeted key dams along major rivers in Germany with specially-designed "bouncing bombs".
