On the R8, as with many other supercars, when you fire it up from cold it runs exceptionally noisily while the oil pressure is raised in the hydraulic tappets.

Here you can see a prime example of that while my girlfriend 'MsShmee' first up the V10 Spyder at 3 degrees C after a freezing night (don't worry the 'smoke' is just the hot exhaust air in the cold outdoors!).
