Traditional landowners of Lawn Hill, southwest of the Gulf of Carpenteria in Queensland, called on May 8 for pastoral properties jointly shared by them and a mining company to be returned to the First Nation descendants of the Waanyi people. The North West Star reported that the Waanyi people planned a sit-in on Thursday, May 10, in a bid to reclaim “100 percent” of the land. The progressive transfer of ownership as a result of the 1997 Gulf Communities Agreement has seen 51 percent of the pastoral properties come under the control of an organisation spearheaded by the Waanyi people, Waanyi Advancement Limited. The remainder is controlled by the mining company New Century Resources. Combined, the two organisations form the Lawn Hill Riversleigh Pastoral Holding Company (LHRPHC).However, the chairman of the Waanyi PBC, Alec Doomadgee, said in a Monday press release that a breakdown in the relationship had occurred as a result of the failure of their counterparts to provide financial and membership records upon request.
