An off-duty police officer has described the moment he ushered elderly bus passengers off the vehicle after it burst into flames this morning in central Rome.

A passenger bus caught fire and exploded this morning in Rome, sending a big black cloud of smoke over the city centre.

Eyewitness video filmed this morning at around 10.30am in Via del Tritone shows the aftermath of the accident.

An ex-lieutenant of the Italian Carabinieri was on the bus when it caught fire. He explained: "There were a lot of people. As soon as I spotted the fire, I took the elders and ushered them out of the vehicle."

According to local reports and the filmer, no passengers have been injured and the blaze was put under control by firefighters.

The cause is unknown.
