Sarah Sanders Slammed For Saying Democrats Who Support Women But Oppose CIA Nominee Are 'Total' Hypocrites

Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Saturday touted President Trump's CIA pick on Twitter.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders is facing criticism for her tweet regarding Gina Haspel, President Trump's nominee to lead the CIA.
"There is no one more qualified to be the first woman to lead the CIA than 30+ year CIA veteran Gina Haspel. Any Democrat who claims to support women's empowerment and our national security but opposes her nomination is a total hypocrite," Sanders tweeted Saturday.
Numerous social media reactions followed to her post.
"No, Democrats are entirely legitimately asking about her running a Thai black site allegedly to torture people," responded one Twitter user. "Her gender is completely irrelevant to that particular question."
"Can u not see the hypocrisy of ur argument here?" wrote another tweeter. "[Hillary Clinton] was also 'the most qualified candidate'. Didn't see you backing HER for POTUS, based on some BS female empowerment theory."
"I don't think people who believe in women's empowerment believe that any woman will do for any job and I don't think you think they believe that," someone else tweeted.
Haspel has faced scrutiny over her past record in the CIA.
An op-ed piece in the Washington Post states, "Haspel was complicit in torture after the 9/11 attacks; her damning record has been widely reported. According to reports in the New York Times, The Post and elsewhere, the 33-year CIA veteran, who is currently deputy director of the agency, ran one of the CIA's black sites created after 9/11."
Amid the controversy, Sanders issued a statement at Thursday's press briefing.
"In her 33 years at the agency, Acting Director Haspel has held senior positions around the globe, overseeing covert operations and counterterrorism efforts to protect the homeland," Sanders stated. "She's one of the most qualified, most capable individuals ever nominated to lead the CIA."
Haspel is scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee on May 9 for her confirmation hearing.
