Disoriented Private Pilot forgets how to operate the transponder (ATC)

A private pilot calls Oxford-Waterbury (OXC) airport for landing, and reports approaching the airport from the Northeast, but he is ually arriving from the Northwest. This generates some confusion. The pilot also concedes that he does not know how to set the squawk code in the transponder (seems to be confusing the squawk and the ident functions).
