Butt-Breathing Turtle Added to List of Endangered Species The Mary River turtle, which can be found in Queensland, Australia, was recently added to a new list of endangered reptiles. The turtle is famous for two unique features: it’s bright green mohawk and its ability to breathe through its cloaca a.k.a. its “butt.” Because it can breathe through its cloaca, the turtle is able to stay underwater for up to 72 hours. Its bright green mohawk, which is actually algae growing on the turtle, is a direct result of its extended time underwater. According to scientists at the Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) of Existence program, the turtle is heavily involved in the Australian pet trade, which has led to its population becoming endangered.
