An Indian man in his 30s was found in the shower room with a towel wrapped around his neck in the Japanese immigration detention centre on Friday. This has led to widespread criticism over medical standards, monitoring detainees and mental healthcare in these centres. With this suicide, the death toll has risen to 14 since 2006. A government watchdog, activists and lawyers have time and again criticized the immigration detention centres which held 1,317 people as of Friday according to the justice ministry.
