Fog Machines, Fog Juice, & Homemade Fog Chillers

In this behind the scenes tutorial video we talk about our experience with different fog machines and chillers that we have used and made for Halloween. The first couple years we started our Haunt we didnt have any fog machines but now we have three 400 watt Halloween Screamers, one 1000 watt Fog Machine, one Chauvet Hurricane 1300 with wireless remote, a homemade modified Igloo style cooler setup, and a trashcan with convoluted or perforated tubing or hose that we got from home depot. We place the little ones in and behind props like the ground breaker, tombstones, trees, walls, coffins, and in our walk through foam crypt coffin. The larger fog machines are close to the house and are placed in hidden spots and either shoot through the chillers or aim into the air. The chillers are plumbed along the bottom of the house in each direction so the fog flows toward the street across the cemetery or graveyard. It helps that there is a slight down hill grade in our yard. We have used dry ice but because we run our display out in the front yard every night during October we started making our own ice to save money. Jeana started filling up all of our Tupperware with water and placing them in the freezer. We had an extra large freezer in the garage that could store all our ice each day. We kept the ice in large black hefty sacks and would transfer the ice to the chillers and then back to the freezer when we shut everything down each night. We carefully wet the ground each night enough for the fog to stick to but not soaking any wires for props and lighting. This really makes a night and day difference in our area where the air is warmer. Funny f, for some reason it always seems to be a bit breezy and windy on Halloween day so the fog never sticks around for us as well as all the nights leading up to it. We purchased the trash cans from a garage sale to save money and the cooler we had for years and its not to bad price wise to do the projects. We found that the better more powerful fog machines send the fog through the chillers too fast before the hot fog gets any chance to cool so we use the slower less powerful machines for the chillers and the powerful machines to fill the air with fog. We have been happy with the results of and have thought about trying some of the fancy fog juices out on the market like Froggys fog but havent yet and due to the amount we like to burn through. The cheap stuff is all we have used so far and even that adds up when you go through 6 or 7 gallons a month. The chillers work great and help create that very eerie and scary look we love to have each year! \r
