President Trump has backed a Fox News host’s claim that the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server was “rigged.”
President Trump has backed a Fox News host's claim that the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server was "rigged."
"'The FBI closed the case on Hillary, which was a rigged investigation. They exonerated her even before they ever interviewed her, they never even put her under oath,'" Trump quoted Jesse Watters in an early Sunday morning tweet.
The president added the comment, "So true Jesse!"
Watters made the remark on his show 'Watters' World' Saturday during a segment criticizing the Department of Justice for being slow in turning over documents related to the ongoing Republican investigations.
He began by reading a tweet from President Trump stating, "What does the Department of Justice and FBI have to hide? Why aren't they giving the strongly requested documents (unredacted) to the HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE? Stalling, but for what reason? Not looking good!"
Watters went on to make claims about misconduct involving the DOJ, the FBI, Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act warrant applications, the controversial dossier about Trump, and Hillary Clinton.
According to an NPR report from last month, this argument involving institutional bias appears to be one way the Republicans are trying to cast doubt on the Russia investigation, but the news outlet calls the approach "highly wonky."
Nevertheless, Trump has continued to promote the narrative, also tweeting Saturday, "Lawmakers of the House Judiciary Committee are angrily accusing the Department of Justice of missing the Thursday Deadline for turning over UNREDACTED Documents relating to FISA abuse, FBI, Comey, Lynch, McCabe, Clinton Emails and much more. Slow walking - what is going on? BAD!"
The DOJ has reportedly promised to turn in 1,000 pages on Monday which adds to the 3,000 pages already submitted since January, notes CNN.
Meanwhile, the FBI has said it would double the number of staff working on the House request to speed up the pace.
