China's labour camps put to test

As Xi Jinping prepares to officially take over as China's next president, perhaps one of his biggest tests will be to reform the so-called re-education through labour prison system that locks up about 160,000 people without trial. The FT's Kathrin Hille meets former detainees and asks whether China's new leadership can rein in its ever more powerful security apparatus and maintain the rule of law.
