The Sunday Times. According to biographer Andrew Morton, Tom Markle used to spend hundreds of dollars on lottery tickets before he finally won the California State Lottery in 1990, collecting $750,000. According to The Times, Meghan's father then lost a majority of the money investing in a failed jewelry business. With the rest of the winnings, Tom Markle was able to buy his daughter Yvonne a car, give his son Tom Jr. money for a flower shop and pay for Meghan's tuition at her Catholic school.
